Eat Local

Experiences, not "likes"

We so absorbed by social media "likes." We've fooled ourselves into thinking the goal of our eating experiences is to "like" what we eat.

But what if we changed the goal?

What if the goal of our dining experiences was to sample what the locals eat -- regardless of whether we like the taste?

What if we ate hyper-local: food and wine produced within 5 miles of the place we are visiting?

A connection with the past

There is usually a reason why food traditions persist. Sometimes it has to do with geography. Sometimes with local tastes. Sometimes with tradition.

What do the ingredients on local menus tell us about the history of the place we are visiting?

How many of the so-called "national dishes" we associate with a place are really a fusion created by historical trade and foreign food culture?

Does eating well always have to be expensive?

A hint about the future

New and popular eateries can also signal something about the future of the places we visit.

Are younger people experimenting with their local food traditions?

Do new restaurants add creative takes to traditional fare or create their own, novel cuisine?

Do the locals linger over their meal with the entire family, or is eating out an "escape" for the adults only?
